If the Cross is a Christian symbol, Why did Jesus himself not introduce it as being such?

A torture stake was a cross. It was designed to kill people. Tying someone to a pole woundn't do anything. Jesus didn't know he was going to die on a cross, so when he was crucified, people ociated him with the thing that killed him.
